What is 'overbanding' in road repair?

Overbanding is a surface repair technique for sealing cracks in asphalt or concrete roads. A strip of hot-applied bituminous or resin-based material is laid over the crack and smoothed out. It seals the crack against water ingress (preventing freeze-thaw damage) and usually includes anti-skid aggregates to maintain traction. It is a cost-effective maintenance solution to extend the life of a pavement before resurfacing is needed.
