What is a 'kicker' in concrete?

Question

What is a 'kicker' in concrete?

Expert Answer
A kicker is a small concrete step (usually 50-100mm high) cast at the base of a wall or column before the main pour. It allows the formwork for the wall to be clamped tightly in the correct position. However, the joint between the kicker and the main floor slab is a 'cold joint' and a frequent leak point in basements. We often waterproof this junction using a fillet seal or resin injection.
