Question

What does load bearing mean?

Expert Answer
A load-bearing element (wall, column, beam) supports the weight of the structure above it. Damaging a load-bearing element can lead to catastrophic collapse. When repairing load-bearing concrete, we often need to install temporary propping (acrow props) to support the weight while the concrete is cut out and reinstated. We never undertake breakout on load-bearing elements without a structural assessment.
